Suriname, South America

The people group in Suriname, South America is the Aukan people- they are a former African slaves tribe that fled the Dutch plantation in the 1700's, into the rainforest jungles around the Tapanohoe River. Their primitive culture has remained in tact for over 300 years.

The IMB missionaries, Charles and Brittany Shirey, are introducing the Gospel- through old testament stories (through a radio broadcast) and then presenting the Jesus film as well as personal witnessing. They are then taking new believers through discipleship classes- they are essentially church planting.

Since 2001, there have been 5 teams with CBC representatives. The first 2 trips were mainly an optometry/ ophthalmic surgery for their eyes- the next 2 were mainly Dental teams, meeting their physical needs. The latest team to go was in 2009 and consisted of 12 adults and 8 children in providing a VBS in the village of Diitabiki for about 115 kids. They would gather the kids together with soccer and other fun games and then singing in 2 different languages would break out.   Bible stories were told by the  Central Baptist children and Charles or the 2 Journeyman, Ryan and Taylor, would translate.  They finished with crafts and had a snack each day.  It is our hope and prayer to send more teams like this in the near future.

JOIN US IN PRAYING FOR THE SHIREY FAMILY AS THEY SERVE IN SURINAME.  PRAY FOR GODS PROTECTION, FOR A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING AMONG THE AUKAN PEOPLE, FOR FREEDOM FROM DEMONIC OPPRESSION, AND FOR THE AUKANS TO COME TO KNOW CHRIST AS THEIR PERSONAL LORD AND SAVIOR.
