Suriname, South America
The people group in Suriname, South America is the Aukan people- they are former African slaves tribe that fled the Dutch plantation in the 1700's, into the rainforest jungles around the Tapanohoe River. Their primitive culture has remained in tact for over 300 years.
The missionaries Charles and Brittany Shirey are introducing the Gospel- through old testament stories (through a radio broadcast) and then presenting the Jesus film as well as personal witnessing. The are then taking new believers through discipleship classes- they are essentially church planting.
Since 2001, there have been 4 teams with CBC representatives. The first 2 trips were mainly an optometry/ ophthalmic surgery for their eyes- the last 2 have been mainly Dental teams, meeting their physical needs.
